Jeremy Brett

Jeremy Brett (1933-1995) starred in what many consider the definitive Sherlock Holmes, produced by Granada between 1984 and 1994. Watson was portrayed first by David Burke and then by Edward Hardwicke.

Jeremy Brett was intensely discreet about being bisexual.  He was married to Anna Massey from 1958 to 1962, and to Joan Wilson from 1976 until her death in 1985.  He was also linked romantically with men including the actor Gary Bond (1940-1995).

He will always be Sherlock Holmes to me. He is one of the few actors to have played both Holmes and Watson. He was by all accounts an extraordinarily fine person, loving husband and father, and tireless supporter of cancer charities. The media respected his privacy and even today, his bisexuality is at most a footnote to his brilliant career as an actor.

I´ve always loved his interpretation of Sherlock. I had seen a few movies, but he "became" Sherlock for me. I love the Granada series and there´re some episodes i´ve seen again and again through the years.
I was planning to see the whole serie again when this entry appeared. Probably i´ll start even sooner now :)

Thank you so much for this fair and succinct summary of a great actor, a wonderful Sherlock Holmes, and an all-round good person, much beloved by his friends and partners.

He married Joan Wilson in 1976, though, after splitting from Gary Bond after a five-year live-in relationship. Not 1966 :)

Thank you very much for that correction.
