I heard an interview once, with a man who started a company that made gourmet ketchup (variously catsup or tomato sauce, depending on your area). He sourced the best tomatoes and the greatest organic ingredients. he tasted tested it and everyone said they were blown away. But he couldn't sell the stuff, and ended up going out of business.

I think the genius of Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes character is a bit like the genius of ketcup. It is not the distinct presence of any strong spice or any huge, idiosyncratic trait--it is a matter of perfect balance. Ketchup has this universal appeal and usefulness because salty and sweet and savory. It has a universality that can be adapted to a lot of different dishes.

Likewise, Sherlock Holmes is cerebral and a pugilist, a philosopher and pragmatist, a lover of classical music and the lowest kind of grand-standing humor. Sherlock Holmes himself is a master of disguise. Do you want to make an action bromance movie full of explosions: Sherlock Holmes. A gay porn flick: Sherlock Homes. A clever modern drama with a swishy asexual star: Sherlock Holmes. A cartoon about a heroic mouse? A time travel comedy? A surreal tale of horror porn? Sherlock Holmes.

You can add any twist, any spice, to make the dish you want. But the underlying appeal, the fast track to fond familiarity, as finally appreciated by the gourmet ketchup vendor, is that the basic condiment is forgiving, smooth, and balanced in a basically unpretentious way. It is for the reinterpretor, the reader or the fan to decide they way want to consume their Sherlock. And that is why he will never go away--and while endless spun and rerun, never improved upon.

All close female characters are quickly thrown away, killed or left at home. Yes, there is the gypsy girl, but when is she ever represented as a love interest?
One character is repeatedly hurt, with close reaction shots from the other. Including the full range of h/c standards from loneliness and grief to torture and near death (repeatedly).
Anachronism, implausible physics and misappropriation of canon is rampant. Canon elements (yes, I mean you Reichenbach falls) are blown hugely out of proportion.
One character proves himself unable to stay sane alone, the other needs to be rescued from a villain.

A Study in Lavender is an anthology from Lethe Press in which each story has a gay or lesbian element. The overall tone of the collection wavers between gay fiction, literary and slash-with-pretentions (which I mean in a positive way, as in: slash-but-at-a-more-professional-level).

Each story is well written, and that is pretty rare in any anthology. Anyone with an interest in Sherlock Holmes and homosexuality is going to need to add this to their collection. But in my opinion what was missing from the line up was a story that was unambiguously about Holmes and Watson. (And possibly, a story where Holmes really pulls of a top flight piece of deductive reasoning. The mysteries tend to be of a 'if you realize the victim/missing-person/target etc is gay the solution is not all that hard to arrive at).

The typical pattern of the stories is that Holmes and Watson investigate a mystery involving an M/M (or, more rarely, an F/F or M/M/F) relationship. The story either ends when the mystery is solved, or has something of a epilogue about Holmes and Watson's own relationship. These endings hit a range of notes from unrequited yearning, through pre-slash, to more conclusive HEA or separation. The structure works pretty well and several of the ending scenes are genuinely touching--but the structure does become repetitive.

The Adventure of the Bloody Coins by Stephen Osborne--Holmes fairly easily solves the murder of a rent boy at the Diogenes club. Slight surprise squicky twist ay the end.
The Case of the Wounded Heart by Rajan Khanna--Lestrade investigates the murder of a colleague and lover. I liked the characterization of Lestrade and having a story focus on a canonical character.
The Kidnapping of Alice Braddon by Katie Raynes--Holmes seeks a missing girl.
Court of Honor by JR Campbell--Holmes investigated a suicide (with shades of Turing's unfortunate fate) and determines its cause.
The Well-Educated Young Man by William P Coleman--This is rather long story in which Sherlock seems to play an almost peripheral role but which ends with a delightfully restrained romantic scene.
The Bride and the Bachelors by Vincent Kovar--A missing husband is found in an unexpected place.
The Adventure of the Hidden Lane by Lyn CA Gardner--A somewhat complicated manor house-style mystery.
The Adventure of the Unidentified Flying Object by Michael G Cornelius--A slightly overlong story give the simple structure of trying to work out why someone is causing a scene in Cleveland Street.
The Adventure of the Poesy Ring by Elka Cloke--Another story involved possible suicide, missing wills etc. As good as the rest but probably suffer for being later in the line up.*

*These are all good solid, entertaining stories but I felt like tropes of missing persons, suicide/murder, marriage and inheritance got a little over-worked. I get that these are totally dominant Victorian tropes but so are pirates, original steampunk, daring 'Boys Own'-style adventure, tales of military bravery etc etc. Maybe I went in with the wrong expectations here.

The major exceptions to the common story pattern were two stories that didn't even exist in a 'verse where Holmes is real:

The Adventure of the Movie Never Made by Joseph RG DeMarco--This story has the most innovative premise, the making of a Basil Rathbone/Nigel Bruce movie. However the story seems overlong and, for me, it lacked spark. I didn't see the need to make Nigel Bruce a rather unpleasant buffoon, like a dark version of how he played Watson.
Whom God Destroys by Ruth Sims--Kind of hard to describe. This story is about a nasty but fascinating character who interacts with Conan Doyle and has a serious chip on his pretty little shoulder. A bit wobbly in tone but it grew on me.

I came across this e-book on Amazon. At about 11,000 words this is not a terribly long story. It starts off on a rather unpromising note, by introducing a younger sister for Sherlock Holmes, and doing so blithely--as if this extra-canonical character requires no explanation. Isobel's adult son has gone missing and Holmes agrees to track him down.

After visiting several locations the errant nephew is found and rescued from the famous fictional gentleman named in the title. The erotic content of the story amounts to a lot of suggestion throughout and a fairly explicit rape scene that I could have done without. Holmes' sexuality is left somewhat ambiguous although H/W is pretty much ruled out.

The story has a few amusing moments, but the language seem rather anachronistic and there are some formatting issues. I would consider this story a curiosity at best. Holmes doesn't do anything terribly impressive as a detective and the story doesn't really go anywhere that I would consider interesting.

As part of their on-going delusion that they still control the Holmes-verse, the controllers of the estate of Conan Doyle* have chosen an official endorsed pastiche writer: Anthony Horowitz (of the Alex Rider series).

* Conan Doyle's estate was left to his heirs and ended up in the control of his daughter-in-law via a bank loan. It went into receivership and was purchased by a non-relative, Lady Etelka Duncan and is now managed by her daughter. The works have been largely out of copyright since 2000 but the estate maintains that latter works are still under copyright and all of the characters are trademarked.

EW reports that there are two Sherlock Holmes series ideas being floated. Nothing overtly slashy. CW has "Hawkshaw" about a mysterious modern descendent of Holmes (who may even think he actually is Holmes), while ABC is looking at "Baker Street Letters" about two brothers living at his old address and investigating cases still being sent there.

Of the two I think Hawkshaw shows more promise--but it is relentlessly heterosexual. Described in Variety thusly: "“Hawkshaw” centers on a mysterious man in his 20s who doesn’t know his real identity — but believes that he’s either a descendent of Sherlock Holmes or is actually the literary sleuth. Hawkshaw’s psychiatrist thinks he suffers from Dissociative Identity Disorder — but her sister, a young cop, soon discovers Hawkshaw’s British charm and powers of deduction can help her solve crimes. Both sisters soon find themselves drawn to him (and perhaps battling for his affection)."

Dark Roses is a 132-page, letter-sized, two column zine. All of the stories are slash, from the fandoms of Blakes 7, Eroica, X-Files, Swan lake and Desert Peach. It includes one Sherlock Holmes story:

The Grey Light of Morning by Violet Nightingale (4 pages).
This is a first person, Watson-POV story of an established relationship but one in which declarations of love have not been made. This commitment occurs within the story. One thing I am not sure of is why this story is in a collection of 'darker' stories when it is devoted to very fulsome declarations of devotion.

Rex and Pola Stout

Rex Stout wrote the famous speech/essay "Watson was a Woman". Now, I do not make the mistake of thinking this address was entirely in earnest, but it is worth looking at the key points of evidence he raises.

1) Sleeping arrangements are, arguably concealed: "...but not once are we shown either Holmes or Watson going to bed."
2) Watson speaks in the manner of a person (woman?) in a relationship. E.g. "I endeavored to break through the reticence."
3) Holmes is solicitous like a person in a relationship. E.g. "...at my request he has played me some of Mendelssohn's Lieder."
4) There is evidence of domestic disagreements. E.g. ". . . I rose somewhat earlier than usual, and found that Sherlock Holmes had not yet finished his breakfast . . . my plate had not been laid nor my coffee prepared."
5) Watson's manner of expression and description can be read as feminine. E.g. "and then it appears that I must have fainted." (Men, presumably, never suffer from syncope).
6) Watson in objecting to cocaine use is " a typical reformist wife".
7) The explanation of Holmes survival at Reichenbach is so nonsensical it must cover for a break and reunion of the relationship.

My Dearest Holmes -- by Rohase Piercy, a.k.a. John H. Watson

My Dearest Holmes is a short novel or novella written in a slash-style with angst and longing--but also including two good mystery plots. It is probably the most successful work of long fiction depicting Holmes and Watson in a fully-realised homosexual relationship.

A great deal of this relative popularity may stem from the fact that it is simply a well written book.

Piercy is quoted as saying: "I believe the original author wanted us to deduce that Sherlock Holmes was gay." (Berger, 1988, pg. 17).

The "GMP" (Gay Mens Press) paperback edition was released in 1988. This edition is 141 pages, ISBN 0854490817. Other known editions include: Gay Mens Press (1994: 9780854490813) and a recent self-published version via Booksurge (2007: 9781419676321).

Jeremy Brett (1933-1995) starred in what many consider the definitive Sherlock Holmes, produced by Granada between 1984 and 1994. Watson was portrayed first by David Burke and then by Edward Hardwicke.

Jeremy Brett was intensely discreet about being bisexual. He was married to Anna Massey from 1958 to 1962, and to Joan Wilson from 1976 until her death in 1985. He was also linked romantically with men including the actor Gary Bond (1940-1995).

I am always missing out on something. After failing to catch 'The Great Game' on PBS I was happy to get the unedited version from iTunes. But apparently I missed a GSH mention in the introduction on PBS.

As Catholic Exchange reports, with some horror: "Perhaps most disturbing, the new “Sherlock” series needlessly forces speculation about the sexuality of one character or another. This was most glaringly evidenced in the introduction for the latest “Sherlock” by Alan Cumming, who asked, “Is [Sherlock Holmes] gay, straight, bi — who knows?”

Another blogger demoans the comment: "Last night I couldn't even get past Alan Cummings' introduction: "Gay, straight, or bi?" WHAT?!?!?!?!?! I imagine that Sir Conan Doyle is rolling in his grave!"

Sigh.

BBC Sherlock: The Great Game

I missed this episode when it aired here in the US on PBS, so I downloaded the episode from iTunes. I think this is my favorite of the (three) episodes so far. The cliffhanger ending is pretty much begging the audience to push for more episodes, which they duly did.

Overall the series of challenges Moriarty sets Sherlock are engaging, and there is a balance between the mystery plot and the 'relationship' plot. I do wish they would throw Watson a few more moments to shine. In the first episode he got to be a man of action. In this one he mostly wandered around behind Sherlock with a bemused expression on his face.

The overall gay quotient (GQ) of Sherlock is similar to Torchwood or Dr. Who with fairly regular low-level references. In this case including Sherlock's basis for deducing that 'Jim' was gay and John's comment that it was good no one saw Sherlock tearing his clothes of in a deserted swimming pool building. (John: "People might talk. Sherlock: "People do little else.")

It's going to happen, I assure you. Especially now that Mr Peanut is being voiced by Robert Downey Jr and has a sidekick called Benson.

Not everyone is convinced. Phoebe from Friends was also of the opinion that Mr Peanut is more than just dapper. Oh well, one more character added to the ranks of the ambiguously gay.

Mark Gatiss (co-creater of Sherlock) is quoted in the Guardian saying that "The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes" is a movie that changed his life: "it was a template of sorts for Stephen Moffat and me as we made our adaptation for the BBC."

"The relationship between Sherlock and Watson is treated beautifully; Sherlock effectively falls in love with him in the film, but it's so desperately unspoken." One wonders if BBC Sherlock shall follow a similar arc and also remain... unspoken.

By contrast, both the actor playing Sherlock and the series co-creator (Steven Mofatt) have explicitly said Sherlock is 'not gay'.

In Hot Pursuit (pg. 151-157) is a short article in the book Metropolitan Life by Fran Lebowitz. The basic point of the article is to satirise the rather specific and often alarmingly high empirical estimates given for crimes such as the sexual pursuit of underage boys. The bulk of this section is a pastiche entitled "A Study in Harlots" in which Dr Watson and Sherlock Holmes (a.k.a. "Homes and Gardens") are stereotypically gay--and Holmes deduces an accurate way to determine the rate of this sort of activity.

The Sexual Adventures of Sherlock Holmes- by Larry Townsend, a.k.a. J. Watson

The Sexual Adventures of Sherlock Homes (TSASH) is a novel released in both hardback and paperback. Earlier editions list the author as J. Watson, a pseudonym of Larry Townsend who is credited as the author in later editions.

This book is clearly in the genre of erotica and predominantly relates to sex acts. However this is fairly well written erotica and set within a reinterpreted canon that I, for one, found rather entertaining. Christopher Redmond, author of the Sherlock Holmes Handbook, who described TSASH as a novel "that betrays a deep and sensitive knowledge of the Canon" (pg. 254)

The Olympia Press paperback edition (The Other Traveller imprint) was released in 1971 under the pseudonym "J Watson". This edition has no page number or ISBN.

The "Badboy" paperback edition of the Sexual Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (left) was released in 1993. Most, if not all, copies of this edition suffer from a badly trimmed cover missing part of the title and author's name on the far right. For this reason TSASH is sometimes listed as being authored by "Larry Townsen". This edition is 258 pages, ISBN 9781563330971.

There is also a German language edition: Heisse Fälle für Sherlock Holmes (1997).

An excerpt of TSASH (Pages 5-21 from the Bad Boy edition, not quite the entire Introduction section) is published under the same title in the anthology "A Century of Gay Erotica" (1998).
